Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

The most common — and most silently damaging — cardiac risk factor. Roughly one in four Indian adults has it; barely half of them know.

What it is

Hypertension is sustained blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg. It usually causes no symptoms at all while it quietly stiffens arteries, thickens the heart muscle, and multiplies the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. That silence is exactly what makes it dangerous.

How it's found

By measuring — properly. Diagnosis should never rest on a single clinic reading: repeated measurements, home monitoring with a validated device, or 24-hour ambulatory monitoring separate true hypertension from one-off spikes and "white-coat" readings.

Treatment

Effective control combines lifestyle measures that actually move the needle — salt reduction, weight loss, regular activity, moderating alcohol — with well-chosen medication where needed. Most patients need more than one medicine, and that is normal, not a failure. Structured long-term management keeps treatment matched to your readings over the years, not to a single visit.

Not sure if these symptoms matter?

A consultation answers that with an exam and the right tests — not guesswork.
